Does it get any better than this...?

Lovely readers,

I hope that your past week has been as wonderful as mine. For those of you that aren't aware yet, I'll fill you in on a little secret... Georgetown College is AWESOMEEE :)! My first week as a college freshman has been one of the most amazing experiences that I've ever had, and I'm not just saying that to promote GC. However, I am convinced that if I were anywhere other than Georgetown, a.k.a. THE NUMBER ONE PRIVATE SCHOOL IN KENTUCKY, my experiences wouldn't have been nearly as memorable.
Let's start with move-in day, shall we? I was an emotional wreck when August 19th rolled around. I was happy, sad, nervous, excited, AND scared. I'm very close with my family, which is where the sad, nervous, and scared parts come in. I was really dreading that I was going to be 2.5 hours away from everyone that is dear to my heart, but GC has a solution to every problem. I'm pleased to say that I now have my own new little family of friends here at Georgetown :)! I was also scared of the responsibilities that come with growing up, such as doing things for myself and not having my mom do EVERYTHING for me. On the other hand, I was so intoxicated by the idea of finally starting the next chapter of my life at GC that I was also happy and excited. You're probably wondering how one can feel all of those emotions at once, but trust me when I say that it is possible!
When my family and I arrived at Georgetown on move-in day there were at least 20 girls waiting outside Knight Hall to unload my luggage from our cars. This is my formal apology to all of you that had to carry endless bundles of my stuff to Room 138. I also want to thank all of you for being so energetic and happy. The attitudes and excitement that you all projected were infectious, and I was instantly less nervous, scared, and sad. You were the start to a wonderful first day at Georgetown, so thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! It wasn't just the girls outside of Knight Hall that were excited to see me and my fellow peers on August 19th. The entire campus seemed to be thrilled about having new additions, and the excitement in the atmosphere was almost tangible. Did I mention that Georgetown College is awesome? Told you so. The only time I started to feel sad was when my mom left to go back home... But honestly, I couldn't even be sad because all of the activites that we did during orientation were so much fun! Orientation helped me to make new friends, learn to step outside of my comfort zone, and adjust to calling a new place home.
In this past week I've accomplished many things. I've made new friends, including a few that I know will be part of my life for years and years to come. I've also already learned how to manage my time between my classes (which I absolutely LOVE), my job working for the English Department (which I am sooo very excited about having), homework (which I already have a ton of, yes), and of course, friends and fun. On campus there are so many things to do with friends, so GET INVOLVED. Finding that balance is the hardest adjustment, but once you do everything works itself out. I've found time to not only go to class, work, and do homework but to also go to a few welcome back parties, to go out and support the football team in their first scrimage of the season, and to also do random things that nerdy college kids do such as play samurai, go to Hongs, and make fun roadtrips to... Dairy Queen. Let me also add that I have been ill with a stomach virus and aside from my family checking on me, I've also had all of my professors ask how I'm feeling, if there is anything they can do for me, and even if I need them to take me to the wellness center. You won't and can't get that kind of treatment at any other school, folks. Get to know your professors because they care about you so much! Interested high school seniors, my hopes that you will attend GC next fall are higher than ever. Request information about Georgetown, visit our awesome friendly campus, or even come and stay for an overnight visit. We'd love to have you! I promise that it's the best decision you'll ever make!
XOXO, K

Introduction!

To those of you that are interested,

Testing, testing… May I have your attention, please? I’m Kelsey Castaneda, and this is my first attempt at blogging. Forgive me if I screw it up. College freshman are allowed some mistakes, aren’t they? Hopefully this WON’T be one of mine. (Read my blog biweekly and you’ll find out!!) If you’re a high school senior interested in Georgetown College, this blog gives you GC’s permission to Facebook-stalk me because it is intended to give you my first-hand account of what life is like and of what to expect as a freshman at GC. Everyone’s experience is going to be different, but this is mine.

I’m from a small town called Columbia that’s about 2 and a half hours away from GC. However, I’m not what they call a “small town girl”. I’m pretty much the biggest nerd you’ll ever meet. I love to read and write, which is why I’m pursuing a major in English with a Creative Writing minor. I’ll ALWAYS have a journal in tow. I also love music and the arts. I attend concerts or shows as frequently as I can. In Columbia, this is thought of as somewhat strange because it’s as stereotypical as a little-southern-town as you can get, as in everyone knows everything about everyone AND their family members. Because I’m not exactly a “country girl” or whatever you’d like to call it, me and my Harry Potter books didn’t fit in too well in this little town and I knew I had to get out and experience life outside the fences of Columbia. I couldn’t be more excited about starting my first year at Georgetown, where I’ll possibly find more than 2 people that I fit in with.

So, why was GC for me? That’s simple; It’s the place to be! Every prospective student is going to have different things that they are looking for when they are on the hunt for the right college, and Georgetown just happened to have everything that I was looking for. Classroom size was very important to me when I was searching because I knew I would not learn well in classes that had 300 people. If I am correct, GC’s student teacher ratio is somewhere around 14 or 15 to 1 and that was a huge plus for me. I was also very concerned about getting an education of great quality. If you have to pay to go to college, you might as well choose the best. For a small liberal arts school, Georgetown has produced some very accomplished graduates, and that impressed me. The deciding factor for me was when I saw the courses available to English majors. I fell in love with the classes offered, and GC had me hooked. I can’t wait to move in on August the 19th and start a new chapter of my life at Georgetown, and I’m so excited that you all will be sharing this experience with me! Feel free to start your Facebook-stalking now .

P.S.- Questions of any kind are welcomed. College is a big step, and the only mistake you can really make is to not ask questions. Always feel free to contact me!

XOXO, K
