It's just-- for the first time, I feel wicked.

Heyyyyy there,

I’ve been at Georgetown for a total of 41 days, which is almost six full weeks for those who, like myself, aren’t math minded. Where did you escape to, precious time? I guess you passed right on by while I was being a busy bee, didn’t you? I forgive you, just slow your roll, why dontcha’? Since the last post, I’ve gotten even more involved in activities on campus. I’m fully expecting my planner to start shouting at me the next time I open it; however, I’m thinking that even though it’s an inanimate object, it knows not to tell me what to do since I AM SuperKelsey and everything. Back off, planner. I got this.

One of the things I’m (very actively) involved in, and SO excited about is…wait for it…SONGFEST!!! For those who are reading this as a high school senior and are thinking, “Whattheheck is a Songfest?!?” have no fear because Kelsey’s here to enlighten you! Songfest is one of Georgetown’s many traditions, and is my personal favorite. Basically, all of the residence halls fight each other, through song and dance, to see who wins. The theme this year is something along the lines of “It’s A Jungle Out There.” I’m in charge of using my mad writing skillz to produce the most awesome script Songfest has ever seen. Hopefully I’ll have a little help from Ms. Catherine Foust (Love you, girl!). I can’t reveal anything else Knight Hall is doing because it’s top secret, but I will admit I’m extremely pumped for October 15th. And, I just have one thing to say: ANYTHING YOU CAN DO KNIGHT HALL CAN DO BETTER!!!

Another activity full of awesomeness that I recently became the Co-Prezzzident, a.k.a Emily Dickinson, of is called Sigma Tau Delta. And no, it’s not a sorority; it’s even better because it’s an English Honorary Club :D! We’re going to have poetry readings, literature discussions, and maybe even share some of our own writings. One of the upcoming activities we have planned is actually on Halloween, because it falls on a Sunday and none of us nerds have any other plans. We’re going to have a poetry reading, creeper-style! Is there anything better to do on Halloween than read Poe by candlelight? I think not. This year, we’re really trying to reawaken Georgetown’s dead-dead poet’s society. I’m hoping that we really will go all Robin Williams on GC, and have meetings, at midnight, in a cave that’s in the forest.

Last, but not least, I’m now going to be working for, and helping to publish, the 2011 Georgetown Review. The Georgetown Review is a book compiled of short stories and etc. that GC publishes every year. Unpublished authors from around the US submit hundreds and hundreds of manuscripts for us to tediously review, and consider publishing in our book. I’m particularly excited about this, because learning to publish and edit other writers’ works will help me grow as a writer and stylist as well. What more could a writer ask for? A special thanks to Dr. Carter for asking if I’d be interested in helping, and to Lauren Martin for introducing me to the office!

Overall, life at Georgetown is wonderful. Last Wednesday was the first official FFG meeting, and was also my “father’s” birthday! We all celebrated with ice cream cake and cookies from one of our wonderful “aunts”. Thanks, KP! By the way, our family has grown! We're now eleven strong. On last Thursday, the Honors Program had a picnic as an opportunity for new Honors students to meet upperclassmen Honors students. We all shared something embarrassing that we’d done in order to obtain a good grade or academic success, and some of the stories were pretty hilariously geekish. I love all of my fellow nerds! I’m also pleased to say that my classes are going very well. I have more homework than I ever could have imagined, but that’s just GC saying, “Welcome to private school, where academics matter! Quit procrastinating!” My two favorite classes are my Eng 115 class, and my Performance of Literature class. Mr. Hanly and Dr. Smith push me to be my best, and I never complain about having to go to their classes. I’m becoming theatre-minded quite quickly! I also must add in that I have the bestestest job on campus: working in the English Department. Dr. Burch, Barbaccia, and Bolden always end my M-W-F’s with a laugh. One day, when I grow up, I want to be like each of you, except all mixed together. I really would be SuperKelsey then, wouldn’t I? But then again, that might be slightly scary :P! Okay, enough. Basically, I LOVE GEORGETOWN AND YOU SHOULD TOO! Prospective students, pleaseeee don’t forget to visit, or come stay for an overnight. It’s important. If you’re a lady, you may even be staying with yours truly! I’m outta here. Peace.

XOXO, K

PS: Here are some pictures from when the gang and I went on a rendezvous to Cincinnati :D.

Family, friends, and fun in the wilderness :)

Hey friends,

Whoa. Whoa, whoa, whoa. After this week, I’ll have spent my first month at Georgetown, and quite honestly, I find that small piece of information completely overwhelming. Everything is going by SO fast, and I wish that Father Time would just slow down his clock, even if only slightly. I suppose that it all relates back to the old cliché of “Time flies by when you’re having fun,” eh? The past 3ish weeks here have been some of the best of my entire life and I feel so fortunate to call this place my home. And yes, I refer to GC as my home because it is a home in every sense of the word.
**Freshmen life lesson #1: Go to the Wellness Center when you’re sick. Not only are they friendly there, but they take care of you too!** The 2nd week of classes went by without me in attendance. I was that unlucky freshmen who came down with what I thought at first to be a twenty-four-hour stomach virus, but what instead lasted for an entire week because it was actually the stomach flu. I tried to tough it out at first and be my own doctor, but needless to say that didn’t work out too well for me. Lizza, my roommate, ended up having to call the Wellness Center and make an appt. for me because I got that ill and dehydrated. After two more trips to Wellness, my mommy finally came to fetch me. One visit to my family doctor and then to the hospital brought the color back to my face, and I’m now feeling much, much better. Thanks to my amazing roommate (who not only bought me Chicken and Stars and Gatorade, but also Lysol-ed our entire room), my Georgetown family/friends, and my actual family, I finallyyyy am healthy and well. So, if you’ve ever wondered what you’d do if you got sick at college and didn’t have your mom right by your side, now you know! However, it still holds true that having your mommy take care of you always makes things better! Love you, mommy!
Now, on to the fun stuff: FFG RETREAT 2010!! Because Georgetown is a Christian college, we have many campus organizations that support our faith. FFG, Freshmen Family Groups, are just one of many of the activities and ministries that are available for you to get involved in. FFG is just what it says it is: small groups of freshmen band together in families, each of which is headed by an upperclassmen “mother” and “father”. Once a week, you and your brothers and sisters have a bible study/group time with your mom and dad (or your Momma T-Pain and Pappy). This past weekend, our FFGs went on a retreat to the wilderness, which was quite scary for someone who is terrified of spiders and mice. During the retreat, each group chose who it wanted as its new parents and then, equipped only with flashlights and new sibilings, the groups had to literally go out and search for them as they hid in the 11pm darkness. FFGs not only provide first-year students with a way to bond and keep faith strong, but they also give us an opportunity to meet some of the most wonderful people this campus has to offer. I already know that my FFG family will always be there for me whether I want to talk about the scripture or just vent about how terribly my week is going. I’ve got “aunts” wanting to make me cookies, brothers picking on me, and parents that are both amazing and loving people. I know that, no matter what I need, they’ll be ready to support me 100 percent. Getting involved in activities such as FFGs are how you stay out of trouble and learn to be good students, kids. And I’m also sure that we have WAY more fun than the partiers because we actually remember all of our laughs, even if they are only of playing silly games that involve grown men running and jumping on each other.
I’ll happily end this entry by saying that Georgetown once again came to the rescue. I was so scared of leaving my family and of not seeing them as much as I wanted. ...but then along came my FFG, which has helped me realize that family isn’t only those people that share your DNA, but those people that you love and that love you right back. They come in all shapes and sizes and consist of the people who take care of you when you’re sick, of friends who put letters in your mailbox because they know you like receiving mail, and those who are always there for you for any and everything. I found family at Georgetown, and I know that if you choose to come here you can too. I have my first “performance” in Performance of Literature tomorrow. Did I mention that GC’s theatre program is spectacular? Goooooo Tigers!

XOXO, K
